Hello, my name is Silvia Kaufer and I was born in 1962 in Hesse, Germany. My birth turned out to be a little catastrophe for my parents since I was born into this world without arms. The thalidomide scandal was going around the world back then and being so young, I thankfully didn’t realize my predicament and had a very nice childhood. I was carefree, always open to new ideas and naturally had to try out all the things other kids did. Roller skating, bicycling, swimming, skiing – there was nothing I didn’t try at least once – but as it turned out there were also some things I would never attempt again. That was how I passed the time from childhood into adolescence.I had already met my future husband at the age of twelve and it was love at ‘second’ sight. After I had finished my training as an office administration clerk, we decided to get married and a year later our daughter was born. And since I found pregnancy so beautiful, our son came into the world exactly 364 days later. Since our nuptials, many years have passed and we have even celebrated our silver wedding anniversary. During most of these years we were on top, but unfortunately every now and then we hit rock bottom. But that’s how life is! It goes up and down and we try to go with the flow. We revel when we are on top and try to take it in stride when we are on the bottom. That’s our motto. By the way, it works great. During a period where I experienced serious health problems I discovered my love for writing. I began work on a children’s book. A short exciting story interspersed with pretty colorful pictures. I had a lot of fun creating my first picture book and when it was finished I had a sample copy printed. As I leafed through the pages I imagined how great a child must feel when it hears or read its own name in the story and thus the idea of ‘personalized children’s books’ was born.
