At age 7 America's Self-Publishing Mentor, Susan McIntire, wrote a letter asking to write and edit two pages of children's news for The Ft. Myers News Press. The editor offered a tour instead although it would be under a decade when McIntire would be published by The Evening Independent in St. Petersburg, FL, earning her first income as a writer.As a High School junior, she served as her school's youngest newspaper editor, and enjoyed having her work critiqued by The St. Petersburg Times movie critic.McIntire parlayed her love of journalism and work on her high school newspaper, literary magazine and yearbook into a leadership role when she was elected by her peers as President of the Florida Scholastic Press Association. During this period, she also interned at the renowned Poynter Institute for Media Studies (then the Modern Media Institute), a "global leader in journalism education and strategy center."Building on her writing skills, every year McIntire applied for and secured a University of South Carolina College of Journalism scholarship, including the highest monetary award, the J. Rion McKissick Dial Scholarship. In addition, McIntire also graduated magna cum laude "with honors" from USC's prestigious South Carolina Honors College.McIntire went on to a successful career in advertising and marketing working with various agencies and in- house for companies from Godfather's Pizza Inc. to Oscar Mayer. In addition, as a military spouse and mother, McIntire traveled the U.S. during her husband's 31-year-career.
