Lo scopo di questo studio è stato quello di testare la capacità adsorbente della biomassa ottenuta dai rifiuti di yerba mate consumati, confrontando l'attivazione mediante pirolisi da sola con l'attivazione con ZnCl2 e la successiva pirolisi. I metalli analizzati erano Cu2+, Pb2+ e Ni2+, che possono causare danni alla salute se ingeriti in alte concentrazioni.
È stato osservato che, tra i metalli studiati, il rame è il più adatto a essere rimosso dall'acqua, con una rimozione di quasi il 100% utilizzando il carbone attivo con la sola pirolisi. Questo processo ha anche mostrato la costante di Freundlich (Kf) più alta, pari a 203,0 mg.
