Born in the U.K., I immigrated to Canada when I was five. I grew up among the resplendent expanse of the Canadian Rocky Mountains in Canada’s West. Childhood was a turbulent time for me, my father was arrested and removed from our home when I was just nine. A short time after that ordeal, my mother would be stricken with Cancer, an affliction she would confront throughout the majority of my formative years. When I graduated high-school, I enlisted into the Canadian Armed Forces as a medic. I felt that in being a medic, all other obfuscating political ideologies that lead to war or deployment would land secondary to the importance of being there to help someone — and that’s all I wanted to do — help people. I would serve for six-years and in that time, I was tasked with carrying the remains of the first Canadian Medic to be killed in combat since Korea. We accompanied the fallen from Eastern Canada to the West, where he was ultimately lain to rest. It was a profound and humbling experience — he was one of our own, my age… twenty-three (at the time). When I left the army, I became a civilian paramedic and without knowing it, battled the insidious effects of PTSD from the start of that career until the end in 2017. After my diagnosis, I would lose my mother to suicide and then battle mightily against an alcohol addiction. I am happy to report that at the time you are reading this, I have been sober for nearly four years. Life is not without peril, though, in 2020, I would lose my sister to suicide as well.I began writing as a way of coping and sorting the calamity of thoughts and feelings that live within me. It was through that endeavor that my blog and podcast were born. The podcast has amassed a humble forty-eight thousand total downloads since the first episode. My book, A Medic’s Mind ended up as a number one bestseller on Amazon for two months this past year.Life has not been easy, but in many ways it has been beautiful. The people and love that I have shared along this bumpy path has been remarkable to state the very least. This why consider myself to be a most fortunate man — for I have been loved, even when I didn’t love myself.Read more about this authorRead less about this author

Woven in War, a quintessential Canadian military story, is also a unique human-interest memoir with wide appeal that follows the vastly different paths of two Canadian medics. One fights a personal battle with addiction, negative self-image, guilt, and post-traumatic stress.

The other is deployed to Afghanistan to face the effects of global conflict. This true story filled with unbelievable serendipity gives the reader a glimpse into the veteran experience, whether on the battlefield afar or here at home.

Written as a tribute to fallen Canadian medic Colin Wilmot, this book chronicles the path of an Edmonton Oilers T-shirt on its most unusual journey during a thirteen-year span-the threads of which bring two unlikely people together. Alternating between author Matthew Heneghan's post-military experience and Philip Hunter's charming yet raw letters to his wife while he was in Afghanistan, this saga takes the reader along for an inside look at the parallel rails of internal and external conflict.

This is not just a medic's story, this is Canada's story, woven in spirit, camaraderie, and influence that outlasts lifetimes. Michael Petrou, historian of the veterans' experience at the Canadian War Museum and author of Renegades: Canadians in the Spanish Civil War writes, ".

. .

this, I think, speaks to another core element of the veterans' experience-a comradeship that is closer to familial bonds than to friendship and yet is utterly unique unto itself. ".
