Author Name
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (Author)
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (/ˈheɪɡəl/; German: [ˈɡeːɔɐ̯k ˈvɪlhɛlm ˈfʁiːdʁɪç ˈheːɡəl]; August 27, 1770 – November 14, 1831) was a German philosopher of the late Enlightenment. He achieved wide renown in his day and, while primarily influential within the continental tradition of philosophy, has become increasingly influential in the analytic tradition as well. Although he remains a divisive figure, his canonical stature within Western philosophy is universally recognized.Hegel's principal achievement is his development of a distinctive articulation of idealism sometimes termed "absolute idealism," in which the dualisms of, for instance, mind and nature and subject and object are overcome. His philosophy of spirit conceptually integrates psychology, the state, history, art, religion, and philosophy. His account of the master–slave dialectic has been highly influential, especially in 20th-century France. Of special importance is his concept of spirit (Geist: sometimes also translated as "mind") as the historical manifestation of the logical concept and the "sublation" (Aufhebung: integration without elimination or reduction) of seemingly contradictory or opposing factors; examples include the apparent opposition between nature and freedom and between immanence and transcendence. Hegel has been seen in the 21st century as the originator of the thesis, antithesis, synthesis triad; however, as an explicit phrase, this originated with Johann Gottlieb Fichte.Hegel has influenced many thinkers and writers whose own positions vary widely. Karl Barth described Hegel as a "Protestant Aquinas," while Maurice Merleau-Ponty wrote that "All the great philosophical ideas of the past century—the philosophies of Marx and Nietzsche, phenomenology, German existentialism, and psychoanalysis—had their beginnings in Hegel."Bio from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This volume, entitled "Within," is part of MetaMad Book's "Philosophical Pairings" series, which attempts to translate interesting foreign language works into English and then pair them up in clever ways. This edition contains a new translation of Hegel's Preface to the Phenomenology of Spirit (Vorwort zur Phänomenologie des Geistes), which is a concise description of Hegel's overall project in the 630 or so pages of the Phenomenology that follows it.

I consider the Preface to be (to quote Hermione Granger) "a bit of light reading. " The second offering in this volume is a new translation of Hermann Hesse's self-described" Indian poem," Siddartha.

As explained in Beyond (2024) the first book in this series, I am exploring the AI-based translation services of a company called deepl. com.

DeepL claims to be the world's most accurate and nuanced machine translation. They specifically claim to be better than Google translate.

This technological marvel (or technological terror, to invoke Darth Vader) provides a wonderful opportunity to output new versions of older works, which in turn feeds directly into my desire to fill the world with books and reading, stamping out the abuses of the social media age. We should all read more, by which I mean an actual book made of paper, and look at our phones less.

At a minimum it will im-prove our intellect and soften our heart. We know, certainly, that the social media world deadens the intellect and hardens the heart.

So let us read instead! This book contains two new translations from the original German into English. .
