Frances Knox has been subcontracted to inspect the Lake Secession Dam located in Abbeville County, South Carolina. He is a certified diver and inspecting the integrity of dams and other water structures is his specialty.

This dive impacts his profession and integrity as he encounters something in the depths of the lake that has no place in his world. Frances refuses to finish the job he was contracted to do.

His reputation as a diver and as someone sane takes a direct hit. The once fisherman's paradise has gone south, hardly anyone catching anything worth bragging about.

This and a series of drownings and disappearances on the lake make the locals think the lake is suddenly cursed. There are no logical explanations.
