Writing. It was something that I had always used as a means of escapism. And yet, it is something more than I realized that had gripped my soul from the resounding ages of the past. Purcell: Dido and Aeneas Act III, “When I am Laid in Earth” or Dido’s lament. The resonating and haunting lyrics sung by Lynne Dawson in the accompaniment of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The fantasies of Beethoven and Amadeus are woven into long-lasting stories of conflict and angst. More than musicians are the storytellers of such Laments. As a child, I would listen without knowing the story or understanding the words, only feeling some deep resonation with my very structure, getting wrapped entirely in the swelling voices and sounds. The early stages of my infatuation began in my childhood with the words of old.Tolkien once surmised that of God’s creation, we are all built within an inherent need to sub-create, and this need took hold of me in the form of writing. In high school English Comprehension class, I was lucky enough to have such a passionate teacher who taught us to expand our creativity and vocabulary. I learned the word palpable then. She even kept the painting of my interpretation of Grendel in contrast to the halls of Heorot. School had been a struggle for me socially as an individual of mixed nationality. Still, this instance always leaves me with a warm memory and an appreciation for those few and far between who do indeed teach and share their wisdom. I wish I could share my success and gratitude with her. But she shared with me bittersweet advice that students often look back on the past like this, yet the cycle continues for many of them, and yet we all eventually move on. So here among my sisters and brethren of the written word, I move on, one letter at a time. My goal is not to become a standing ovation to time or amass great fame and fortune but to take those willing on an Adventure through the space of my sub-creation. As we share a journey, a bond forms in the melodious words that our inner narratives speak through to us in ways that take us to boundless places. I want to be such a one. To take those who are willing somewhere special. Who am I but to dream and aspire? Thanks to such remarkable teachers and historical figures, I strive to do my utmost to make every word a work of art and a symphony of adventure that would leave the mind in the ultimate bittersweet feeling that accompanies the phrase, ‘The END.’Read more about this authorRead less about this author
