Mike retired after thirty-five years in the financial industry in 2003 and took up photography and avocational archaeology.He studied Large Format Photography at Scottsdale Community College and archaeology at Arizona State University.At ASU, he took part in the Spring 2007 class “Legacies on the Landscape,” which studied prehistoric impacts on Perry Mesa landscape. He authored a paper in that class entitled, “Possible Construction Sequence for Room Blocks in Richinbar Ruin on Black Mesa at Agua Fria National Monument.”He is a member of the Arizona Archaeological Society (AAS) and the Cultural Resources Committee (CRC) of the Friends of the Agua Fria National Monument (FAFNM).As a member of the CRC, he helped produce the 2011 symposium on Prehistoric Cultures of the Perry Mesa area and co-edited the publication on it which came out a year later.As a member of the AAS, he obtained certifications in Prehistory of the Southwest, Rock Art Recording and Archaeological Mapping.He has taken over 420 hikes in the Perry Mesa area, logging over 1800 kilometers and taken almost 24,000 photographs. During those hikes, he documented approximately nine hundred and fifty prehistoric habitation structures.During 2018 and 2019, he volunteered at the Arizona State Parks and Trails as an assistant to the Site Steward Program’s state-wide coordinator. Afterwards, he was the Regional Coordinator for the Agua Fria Region of that program for two years.In 2018 Mike received the Arizona Governor’s Archaeological Advisory Committee’s “Avocational Archaeologist” award.Read more about this authorRead less about this author
