Driven insane by a tragic accident, Benny Smith's feelings bubble to the surface when he is released from a mental health institution. A terrible accident years earlier had killed his childhood friend and poor Benny was so overwhelmed by what he witnessed he lost his sanity and was hospitalised.

In 1987, some years after the tragedy, Benny is suddenly and unexpectedly released with inadequate supervision. Haunted by the incident years earlier, and forgetting to take his medication, his disorder creates within him a disturbing fascination which can only be gratified by killing children.

As Nottingham CID investigate, Detective Inspector David Stark is struggling with demons of his own and discovers that he and the killer have something in common. .
