Alexis discovered her love for the written word at the age of 12, when she began writing short stories and poems as a retreat from her painful outer world. The flexible and limitless nature of her creativity reinstated a sense of freedom and control at the turn of a very long, very chaotic time in her life. Her pen became her wand, and it was love at first write. That love, however, had to be shelved over a three-year period, as her survival became an everyday matter after the incarceration of her father when she was 17. Though adversity and uncertainty were all too familiar, the loneliness and sadness that came with being devoid of a home or family she could trust introduced her to a new shade of darkness.
