Author Name
Elisabeth Frischauf (Author)
Born 1947, Frischauf, is a neuro-psychiatrist and poet who grew up on the Upper West side of Manhattan as a child of refugees from Nazi Austria. Her father’s mother and aunt were shot into a pit outside Riga, Latvia. Her mother, a psychoanalyst in the midst of training, arrived in Baltimore, expecting she could extricate her mother. Eventually, as her mother, aunt and uncle- in -law were about to be deported to a concentration camp, they chose to commit suicide together. But with fierce determination and hope her parents stuck a small stake into the new land. With a hand-built summer cottage they nurtured a fruitful garden by a lake in upstate New York, rebuilding with care and patience their broken lives for the new, growing family- Frischauf and her younger brother.Frischauf speaks movingly of this and her growing up years in her haunting memoir poem, They Clasp My Hand, published in April, 2022, as a bilingual, English/German book from the Theodor Kramer Verlag,Vienna, Austria and short listed for the Austria Literary Prize, that same year.A wonderful book of poems,” writes Edmund de Waal, best-selling author of The Hare with the Amber Eyes,“ I am finding such resonance with them.” An English only edition is currently on-demand through Amazon/Kindle and Draft2digital platform outlets. Frischauf is also an accomplished ceramicist and mixed media artist who has appeared in juried shows and private collections. “Writing is intimately bound up with my art work,” says the poet who is a regular contributor to online poetry platforms, including those who welcome politically inspired work.A dedicated grandmother, she lives with her husband, a playwright, on a small plot of land in Putnam County, New York. She writes and lovingly creates art, as well as bountiful gardens inspired by the strength and courage of the stalwart souls who came before her.Read more about this authorRead less about this author
