Maxi was born a perfect baby girl, but a terrible accident left her burned and scarred. Her family never talked about the scars, and soon Maxi forgot all about them.

When she was old enough, Maxi went to school. She had a kind and thoughtful teacher, and no one pointed or stared or called her bad names.

But when her family moved, Maxi’s new school was totally different. On the very first day, the students acted like Maxi was a monster.

They called her Burnt Head Collard Greens. Young Maxi shows us how it feels to be different because of a physical defect.

She shows what it feels like when a teacher is silent, and what can happen when a teacher steps in to make the bullying stop. Above all, Maxi shows us how, with courage and a teacher's help, it can all get better.

______________________Award-winning artist and US Veteran Maxine Thomas Davis, was born in Meridian, Mississippi. She started her art journey at age six, drawing and painting on the walls of her parents’ home.

Her journey continued into middle school, then high school, where she first started realistic graphite pencil portraits of classmates. Although Maxine had to put down her art to raise a family, years later, her passion for art reignited after she was asked to do a wall mural for her church.

After that, she pursued a degree, studying fine arts and graphic design. Today, not only is she a graphite pencil artist, she has also illustrated nine books.

Burnt Head Collard Greens is her tenth, and the first book also written by her. Maxine has three daughters and seven grandchildren.
