Ray Longhenry, graduated from the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Helicopter School in October 1970. Then served a year in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. Ten years later I found myself flying commercial helicopters in the Alaskan bush. The inspiration for these stories came after having numerous dreams while camping on Kodiak Island. The reoccurring visions showed me crashing a helicopter into an Alaskan mountain--followed by dreams of a forced landing into the frigid sea. A year later, in 1981, both nightmares came true in separate events. In the early spring a 'whiteout' snow condition helped me fly into Red Mountain, causing major damage to the aircraft. Five months later, ten miles west of Homer Alaska, the Bell 206B helicopter with three passengers, suddenly got quiet when the turbine engine experienced a small explosion/pop. We successfully auto-rotated to the cold waters of Cook Inlet six miles from shore. The NOAA Ship Rainier came to our rescue. After a few days off work, I came to remember having those dreams the previous year and then the questions came. Did I co-create these two happenings?
