Author Name
Alan F Atkinson (Author)
Now a freelance editor and author, I have been a long-term journalist in newspapers, radio and television. Newspapers included the Guardian London, The Scotsman Edinburgh and The Advertiser Adelaide. In Perth, Western Australia, I won several awards for TV investigative reporting. In Adelaide I was awarded Journalist of the Year. My first book published by the ABC and available now as an e-book through Harper Collins is called Three Weeks in Bali. It is an eyewitness account of the Bali bombings in 2002 in which 200 people died, including 88 Australians. I also contributed to Dr Yael Danieli's book The Trauma of Terrorism (Howarth Press). My new book The Trials of Billy Freeman is the true story of a former child convict ancestor (who I did not know about until recently!). Billy arrived in NSW aged 14 having been sentenced to 7 years' transportation with hard labour for stealing cheese. He gained his freedom indentured to a NSW pastoralist then came across country in 1838 on Captain Charles Sturt's "forgotten journey" - bringing cattle from NSW to South Australia. Billy Freeman, who lived to 81, was a colourful character who though technically a free man lived under the "stain" of convictism in Australia's early settlement days. Of all the Australian states, South Australia has most loudly perpetuated the historic myth that it was convict-free. But although it was not a destination for transportees, convicts and ex-convicts arrived in their thousands and helped build the new province.

One of those was Billy Freeman. This is the true tale of a child convict who, after suffering the horrors of gaols and prison hulks, arrived alone in New South Wales aged just 13.

Having laboured to gain his freedom, he then undertook an arduous cattle drive to South Australia with pioneer explorer Charles Sturt, and lived a hard farming life - confronting fire, economic depression and family tragedy - in the Adelaide Hills. All the while, Billy lived in the shadow of official discrimination, and he continued to have brushes with the law, even facing gaol again, with his wife Sarah, in middle age.

Based on official records, the notes of family members and published histories, Billy's story is that of an unsung pioneer battler. It's a tale of determination and toughness, from a brutal childhood to making a new life in an often harsh environment.
