Author Name
Beverly Hurwitz MD (Author)
Before becoming an author, Beverly Hurwitz spent four decades as a physician in big cities and small towns. Before that, she spent a decade as a health and physical education teacher in rural public schools. She’s also spent her entire life communing with trees and birds and other natural presences. Her 2022 novel, War in the OR, confronts the business takeover of health care and the degradation of patient services. Is the Cat Lady Crazy?, a novel published in 2020, explores the issues of unusual diagnoses in difficult patients. Some of the characters in her 2019 novel about abortion, Nobody Else’s Business, were inspired by the experiences of her high school students in the early 1970s, when forced marriage, coat hangers, and suicide were common ways for teens to deal with accidental pregnancy. Some of the characters in Nobody Else’s Business are based on her experiences as a neurology fellow in the 1980s, taking care of patients who were profoundly disabled due to a rubella outbreak in the 1960s, or birth trauma, or child abuse.Dr. Hurwitz’s nonfiction books, Park City Hiking Guide and Park City Walking Guide impart practical information about the numerous benefits and few risks of exercising outdoors. From encounters with earthquakes or rattlesnakes, to how to choose footwear and sun protection, these books not only aid navigation of a high altitude resort town with a complex trail system, but they make walking and hiking safer and more enjoyable for people (and dogs) of all ages.Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Hurwitz holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in health education, along with her M.D. degree. She has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of numerous professional organizations. Since retirement from clinical practice in 2006, she has been focused on writing books, in addition to writing reports as a consulting medical expert for state and federal judges presiding over cases of Medicare and disability fraud. When she's not writing or hiking, Beverly and her husband enjoy golf, skiing, and listening to rock n roll.Read more about this authorRead less about this author

Darius Amari was a research scientist dedicated to helping humanity conquer deadly viruses. His laboratory studied the superior immune systems of bats.

But then, the COVID-19 virus came along and caused Darius to suffer permanent heart damage after barely surviving the pandemic. Darius was hovering on death’s doorstep when his life was saved by an organ donation made by the family of a young accident victim.

After the successful transplant however, there were unexpected changes in this brilliant scientist. He developed new interests, behaviors, and vulnerabilities that were not compatible with working with highly lethal germs.

As his associates worried that he could unleash a bioterrorism disaster, the associates of the donor struggled with the secret that the heart had previously belonged to someone who was filled with rage. Was it Darius’s new heart that turned him into a different person, or was there a hidden someone inside this scientist that emerged after he lost his battle with a virus? Had the virus changed his brain? Could a transplanted heart retain the donor’s state of mind? Darius’s young wife, Doctor Thea Baccay, searches for answers to these questions.
