Bruce Wendler (1952- ) was born in a little town Harvel, Illinois. Born into a preacher's family he moved around like a flee on a dog. From Illinois into Oklahoma, spending some time in Nebraska, then into the Chicago area, and then mid-state Illinois; he added Kansas and California to the list. He found he was good at three things, mathematics, finding jobs, and an imagination as big as the sky. People notice he had clever ways of working problems early in his life. As a newspaper delivery boy he became the “go to” kid for covering other kid’s routes. He would work on his uncle's farm in Nebraska learned to drive a car at age 12. At the University of Illinois, he worked for professors helping them solve engineering problems and run experiments like an assembly line. This creative ability would be noted by different employers and professors when he got his Master’s Degree at USC in California. Maybe his crowning achievement was being called to help train people systems engineering to lead the Columbia Return-to-Flight effort only to result in being told to lead the team himself. The team was successful and he was awarded the NASA public service metal, the first recipient of his company to receive one while employed at the company. But that creative work was slowly being used in other ways. By the time of college age, he had enough religion in him to inoculate him from it. During his freshman year, people from a Christian campus ministry were going around his dormitory pedaling Jesus looking for sheep willing to listen to them. That was repulsive to him at the time because all he saw at church growing up was that people acted one way on Sunday, and the rest of the week they were just as rough on their kids as any non-church family was on their teenagers. Then when his close friend's father, who went to his church, committed suicide well that was it for him on religion. But the hound of heaven caught up with him in his freshman year and he came to his senses on what it means to be born again. That led him on a path unimaginable in the tasks Christ opened the door for him to do. In 1988 he was asked to redraft material used for new believers and was blessed with a team putting in hours of time finding the simplest, clearest verses in the Bible that were fundamental. The material took off, initially to several countries all by word of mouth. It now has been published all over the world reaching millions. The credit goes to Christ, not to him. The same could go for new material he is developing now. Where does creative work come from? It starts with seeing and recognizing the beauty. He loves landscape photography and people love his work. Now with writing creatively he can combine two things he loves, showing an old aspect of the Bible in a new way and using photographs and connect-the-dots insights to help others do the same.Read more about this authorRead less about this author
