Apparently, there is scientific plausibility for the existence of a specific pantheon of Buddhist gods: the Arupa Dhatu gods. There are a total of 11 Arupa Dhatu gods.

4 of them are the gods who descended upon the Earth: Vairochana, Brahma, Indra, and Benzai. The Eternal Shadow and the Fading Star themselves are 2 Arupa Dhatu gods, because their true names are respectively Mara and Tara.

To the surprise of their friends and family, Rilk, Mary, Larina, Victor, and Angela are the remaining 5 Arupa Dhatu gods, since they are respectively the reincarnations of Amitabh, Guanyin, Pandara, Ganesh, and Marichi. In order to explain everything to the 5 reincarnations, Vairochana has to start from the very beginning of the universe itself, the time when all 11 Arupa Dhatu gods were born.
