Author Name
Leonard P. Hindsley (Author)
Leonard P. Hindsley has produced books in his special area of interest - 14th century Dominican women mystics in Germany. That was an unprecedented century of mystic writings produced by Dominican nuns. Margaret Ebner (1291-1351) wrote her Revelations, a spiritual autobiography written at the Monastery of Maria Medingen. In The Mystics of Engelthal: Writings from a Medieval Monastery he surveys the astounding production of mystical texts concerning the nuns and priests of the Monastery of Engelthal. One of these texts appears in Adelheid Langmann's Revelations, also a mystical autobiography. He was able to translate these texts because he holds a doctorate in Germanic Languages and Literatures specializing in medieval literature. He presents commentary and interpretations of these texts having specialized in spirituality for the S.T.L.(Licentiate in Sacred Theology). Forthcoming is a translation and commentary on Christina Ebner's (1277-1356) Sister-Book of Engelthal. He is preparing a book on the Spirituality of St. Dominic as influenced by St. John Cassian. After that he will print a translation of Christina Ebner's spiritual autobiography. Leonard Hindsley is professor emeritus of Providence College and is now happily retired and able to finish these important texts for publication.Read more about this authorRead less about this author

Numerous books entitled Revelations were written by Dominican nuns and mystics of the fourteenth century. Adelheid Langmann (1306-1375), a nun of the Monastery of Engelthal in Bavaria, composed her own Revelations recording events of her life and mystical experiences with the Trinity, Christ, the Virgin, and angels and saints.

Also included in this volume is The Prayer, a meditation on the events of the life of Christ and petitions connected to them. Excerpts from her correspondence with the Cistercian Abbot, Ulrich of Kaisheim, show her connection to a wider circle called the Friends of God.

Adelheid’s writings reveal an intense spiritual life in a Dominican monastery in the context of the religious and political turmoil of her times. Given the confusion of her age, Christ revealed to her: “.

. .

no one can do anything more dear to me than to pray for sinners. ” She dedicated herself to praying for the souls in purgatory, the conversion of sinners and the strengthening in faith of all who believe.
