Author Name
Liam Byrne (Author)
Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP is Chair of the House of Commons Business & Trade Committee, and the Global Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. A former Cabinet minister, Liam did some of the toughest jobs in government in the Home Office, No 10 Downing Street and Her Majesty's Treasury, where he was Chief Secretary. An Honorary Professor of Social Science at the University of Birmingham, Liam was a Fulbright Scholar at the Harvard Business School and Gwilym Gibbon Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford. He was elected to Parliament in 2004, giving up a successful business career as a technology entrepreneur to serve one of the poorest communities in Britain, his constituency of Hodge Hill in East Birmingham where five generations of his family lived and worked.Liam is the author of Dragons: Ten Entrepreneurs Who Built Britain (2016), Black Flag Down: Counter-extremism, Beating ISIS and Winning the Battle of Ideas (2016), and Turning to Face the East (2013). Dragons: Ten Entrepreneurs Who Built Britain - What the Critics SaidA 'whistle-stop account of some of Britain's greatest entrepreneurs and deal-makers...leaves you longing to know more' - The Times'A great history of Britain's buccaneers, wealth creators and adventurers...brilliantly connects past to present' - Dr Tristram Hunt MP'Compelling history' - Phil Collins, The Times'Written with infectious enthusiasm' - Sir Roderick Floud, editor, Cambridge Economic HistoryBlack Flag Down - What the Critics Said'An important and timely intervention rooted in hands-on experience gained in real communities' - Baroness Sayeeda WarsiAn 'excellent, revealing and clear-sighted book' - Andrew Hoskens, New StatesmanTurning to Face The East - What the Critics Said“An excellent account, by a frontline politician, of how Britain needs to change to succeed as an innovation nation in a world in which China plays an increasing role. It deserves to be widely read.” Lord Sainsbury, Chancellor, Cambridge University“What a wake-up call! We really are at five-to-midnight as our country deals with Asia’s century. Turning to Face the East sets out the ‘how did we get here’ and then the ‘what can we do about it’ and leaves hanging in the air the conclusion that every reader must reach about what will happen to us if we do nothing.” Lord Digby Jones“Liam Byrne’s wide ranging study, grounded in his own experience as a politician, asks how fit for purpose UK policy is towards this major complex power, and finds it wanting. This book is a wake-up call for policy makers, business people, academics – anyone who needs to think and engage with China.” Kerry Brown, Former Head of Asia Programme, Chatham House“Liam Byrne’s book is a thoughtful and wide-ranging reflection on one of the most crucial economic issues facing Britain today. It will stimulate an important and much-needed debate on our future in an era of growing Chinese power.” Rana Mitter, Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China, University of OxfordRead more about this authorRead less about this author

The super-rich have never had it so good. But millions of us can't afford a home, an education or a pension.

And unless we change course soon, the future will be even worse. Much worse.

But things don't have to be like this. In this bold new book, former Treasury Minister Liam Byrne explains why wealth inequality has grown so fast in recent years; warns how it threatens our society, economy and politics; shows where economics has got it wrong - and lays out a path back to common sense, with five practical ways to rebuild an old ideal: the wealth-owning democracy.

Liam Byrne draws on conversations and debates with former prime ministers, presidents and policymakers around the world, together with experts at the OECD, World Bank and IMF, to argue that after twenty years of statistics and slogans it's time for solutions that aren't just radical but plausible and achievable as well. The future won't be a land of milk and honey but it could be a place where we live longer, happier, healthier and wealthier lives.
