It all began with the wizardry competition. 15-year-old Kiano is brought up by a hard-nosed witch who, despite making his life a misery with her fatuous rules, showers him with unconditional love.

They live at the top of a conical hill on the outskirts of a settlement populated by humans and make a living by gathering medicinal herbs and wild mushrooms in the adjacent woods. When Mahgrad decides to hold a wizardry contest for the common people of Gartâr to compete against the members of the aristocracy, Kalani firmly warns him about the great perils of getting involved with the Order of Mages as a sorcerer.

But that does not hold Kiano back from taking a closer look at the gripping glade where the fierce contest will take place. This proves to be a grave mistake and the beginning of an epic journey that returns him to his roots.
