Determined to do her bit for the war effort, Yorkshire lass Evie Sinclair leaves her island home to become an Ack Ack Gunner Girl, defending Britain from Luftwaffe attacks. On the train steaming towards the Durham training depot, Evie meets lively fellow recruits Lily and Gloria - and the three become firm friends.

As they embark on a gruelling training programme, Evie, Lily and Gloria grab whatever rare opportunity they can to enjoy themselves. At a local dance, Evie meets handsome young RAF pilot, Matt, and the pair begin a passionate romance.
