Alison R. Marshall is Professor of Religion at Brandon University in Manitoba, Canada. Marshall was attracted to Asian studies through family connections: an uncle who ran an import-export business in 1920s Montreal; and aunt who worked for Toronto's Chinese community. For her doctorate in East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto, Marshall studied under Julia Ching, a renowned scholar of Chinese religion. An Asian studies specialist, Marshall researches, teaches and writes on Chinese, Filipino and Canadian history, religion, culture and migration. Alison R. Marshall is author of three monographs and one co-edited handbook: The Way of the Bachelor: Early Chinese Settlement in Manitoba (2011) 2015 Canadian Society for the Study of Religion Book Prize and Manitoba Day Award recipient, Cultivating Connections: The Making of Chinese Prairie Canada (2014) both with UBC press, Bayanihan and Belonging: Filipinos & Religion in Canada (UofT Press, 2018), and The Bloomsbury Handbook of Religion and Migration (May 2022) with Rubina Ramji (first author), Alison Marshall (second author).Alison Marshall is former co-chair of the American Academy of Religion unit in Religion and Migration.
