Author Name
Andy Stuart (Author)
I was born in Malaysia in 1960, my dad was there with the Royal Engineers. We came back to Britain a year later and as part of the Army of the age we moved between the UK and Germany several times. Between moves we stayed with my maternal grandparents, Arthur and Clare Walton (nee O’Connor from Ballinasloe, Ireland). They’d married in 1934 and lived near Aldershot. Clare’s first husband a soldier, John Healy, had died of tuberculosis. My secondary education was stabilised at Crown Woods School in Eltham, London. Close to Woolwich, which is why I ended up in the Artillery for a short army Commission prior to University.Three years later after studying Economics at Warwick, I rejoined the army. After Sandhurst I spent time in Germany, Northern Ireland and Thirsk, North Yorkshire, with 27 Field Regiment Royal Artillery. In 1987 I started in the City. Securities markets and banking, most of which with Robert Fleming &Co., and travelling regularly to Hong Kong, Tokyo and New York. I left finance in 2008 to co-found a technology development business, CareWhere Ltd.This book and the other two in this series (yet to be released) came out of a ‘lockdown’ project that spiralled when I sat down and started writing. Once these are all available through 2024, I plan another novel about fraud and scams in the financial sector, set in the 1920’s/30’s.Andy StuartJanuary 2024 Read more about this authorRead less about this author

August 1914. The world would never be the same for millions of people.

The Great War was fought by ordinary men. They became small cogs in an industrial killing machine.

Arthur (Wally) Walton, a boy of 16 enlists the day war is declared to help a friend. The men he meets span class, education, politics and religion.

Thrown together by fate, their war was not all mud, death and barbed wire. They trained, marched and peeled potatoes.

Gambled, drank, had Christmas leave and sweetheart letters, were movie stars, had stupid ideas - that worked, manned a firing squad, saw death and destruction, but still retained their humanity toward the enemy and witnessed remarkable bravery from unexpected people. These are tales of ordinary men in the ranks, their inspiring NCO's and young officers.

A journey from boy to soldier. 1914-1916.

The first book of three. Inspired by the stories he told.

Arthur Walton, my Grandad, 1898 - 1972. .
