Marlana-Patrice Pugh Hamer is an award-winning poet, writer, performer, public speaker, and educator. She has been writing since she was nine years old. Before taking an early retirement, she was a full-time English and reading teacher in Cleveland Metropolitan public schools. Marlana-Patrice has actually taught on most grade levels, including teaching Freshman Composition at Purdue University. Her poems have been published in various anthologies, most recently Dimepiece: Ten Years of CLI Poetry. Another recent anthology, Indiscernibles in Arizona includes one of her creative nonfiction pieces. In May 2024, she debuted her first poetry collection, Taking Off My Black & White Saddle Shoes: Cleveland Poems. It is her memoir in verse mainly about growing up in segregated Cleveland, Ohio.
