Josefina J Card (Author)
Josefina J. Card PHD is an author, CEO of Sociometrics Corporation and a leading voice in U.S social and behavioral science research. Over the last four decades Josefina “JJ” Card has founded and led four companies, including Sociometrics Corporation, which owns and operates the online Sociometrics Social, Behavioral and Health Sciences Library: a diverse collection of over 400 exemplary datasets and evidence-based programs that form a bridge between research and real-world applications. She also founded Social Research Applications (SRA), a non-profit organization, to benefit communities, schools, clinics and hospitals throughout the country.Dr. Card has served as Principal Investigator of over 85 Research and Development grants funded primarily by the US National Institutes of Health. She has authored over 90 books, monographs, and journal articles. Her work is noted for its integration of behavioral, psychological, and sociological perspectives in the study of health and the promotion of healthy behaviors. She has been a member of many federal advisory committees, serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the ecumenical and interfaith Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA, and co-founded the Spirituality Council at her local Catholic parish church. Her extensive contribution includes working as a volunteer executive mentor in Santa Clara University’s Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship.Following this incredible output over the years, in her early fifties, Dr. Card embarked on a spiritual journey that transcended her identities as wife, mother, friend, and worker. The journey brought her back to the church she had left thirty years earlier. It led her to a deep, visceral realization that she was part of a larger reality, that a greater force, a Holy Spirit lives at the heart of this reality, and that this Spirit was available to call on any time of the day or night.Dr. Card’s spiritual writing is grounded in her experience as an immigrant: She grew up in the Philippines, the oldest child of a large family. Her childhood was both sheltered and constrained by the conservative Catholic culture prevalent in that country. A Fulbright scholarship brought JJ to the US, where she met her future husband and abandoned religion to rely on humanistic values, such as compassion and integrity. With God’s help and her atheist husband’s support, she returned to the faith with new eyes and found more, much more.Dr. Card is married to Stuart Card, PhD, a Silicon Valley pioneer who started the fields of human computer interaction and information visualization. They have two daughters and four grandchildren. Along with the Sociometrics Corporation, Dr. Card runs two companies for her family: The Stuart and Josefina Card Family Foundation and Cardelia Enterprises. The Card Foundation has giving programs in the Philippines and the US aimed at facilitating the education and health of impoverished youth. Cardelia Enterprises is a family partnership that owns and leases out real estate properties in the San Francisco Bay Area.Read more about this authorRead less about this author
