Hi, My names Brett and I wanted to begin by telling you a little about me and why I decided to write this book.Having worked in broadcast media my whole working life I’ve reached a point where literally none of the companies I’ve loved working for through the years actually exist anymore! The industry I have embraced and felt so proud to be a part of has simply gone. Local radio is now from a bygone age and my children simply wouldn’t understand how fantastic it was back in the da. How so many local celebrities have simply vanished from the spotlight.Being in the privileged position of having a home studio I have been able to experiment with a variety of different projects and one of the many I enjoy the most is podcasting. It's a fantastic medium that gives you the opportunity to connect with like-minded people without the need to be a huge commercial success. My podcast journey started through finding it difficult to switch off at bedtime, I generally listen to old time radio podcasts to help me drop off to sleep but the one with the shows I enjoyed the most drove my wife mad due to the hosts voice which I admit made him an extremely tough listen. So, I decided I’d record my own. Just for my own use really but, somehow it took off and I was getting quite good listening figures.(Feel free to take a listen, it’s called Brett’s Old Time Radio Show and you’ll find it on all the usual podcast outlets) I have found myself becoming more fascinated by the history that surrounds us the older I get. It’s probably the old story of living in the past and anyone who knows me will quite happily tell you that I do tend to be living my life in the 1980’s which is fine (My Dad’s mind is still in the 60’s so I guess there’s a pattern)I joined lots of local history groups on social media and became enthralled by the number of local mysteries in my area that I wasn’t aware of.As an example, I couldn’t believe that a woman who held the title of the world’s most prolific female serial killer had lived a stones throw from my own childhood home. There are so many mysteries that I knew nothing about and it’s been both fascinating and shocking to discover some of the tragic circumstances surrounding these cases.Initially I had planned to cover some of the mysteries around the west country and to do so made a freedom of information request to the Avon and Somerset Police, then (because I absolutely love the counties) expanding my geographical area to Devon and Cornwall. There were so many interesting and unsolved mysteries that had happened right on my doorstep, it seemed a brilliant opportunity to create bite sized podcast episodes where I could tell people about some of these sometimes shocking and definitely mysterious stories that had happened through the years. These were real people, living in my neighbourhood that were embroiled in these tangled webs of murder and deceit. As the episodes continued, I was getting requests to investigate other mysteries, in different areas.I decided to expand my search for stories and information into places I had spent time, I love Devon and Cornwall having spent most of my childhood in the beautiful village of Beer in East Devon and through that I have a warm affection for Lyme Regis, Colyton, Seaton and by association Taunton and Exeter. My work in radio has enabled me to spend time in a variety of different locations and I’ll be taking you to all of them throughout this book and if you listen back to the podcast ‘Sunday Night Mystery’ you’ll hear all of the stories told by me.The stories in this book are the edited scripts from my Sunday Night Mystery Podcast episodes but some further information and images have been added. If you have any ideas for mysteries that we can add to our podcasts then I’d absolutely love it if you could give me your recommendations and perhaps, we can explore them together! Thanks so much for your support,BrettRead more about this authorRead less about this author
