Author Name
Myra Lewin (Author)
Ayurvedic Practitioner (AP) and Ayurveda Yoga Therapist (AYT), Myra Lewin is a professional member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) and Yoga Alliance (ERYT 500). A master yogini, Myra has amassed more than 50,000 hours of Yoga teaching experience spanning 30 years of practice. She is the author of several acclaimed books on Ayurvedic eating and is also the host of two remarkable podcasts on holistic healing, “Everyday Ayurveda and Yoga at Hale Pule” and “Spark Your Intuition”.Intuitive, perceptive and courageous, master teacher and spiritual guide Myra Lewin is a gifted healer and explorer of the infinite possibilities of being and becoming. Myra embodies an uncommon integrity. She lives by the guidance of her heart, and according to the principles that she teaches. Above all, Myra values simplicity: the ease of the present moment where all things are possible. Myra loves that life is an ongoing process of creation and destruction, of being and of becoming. She sees that the possibilities of transformation are indeed infinite. Tracing the steps of Myra’s life reveals the wonderful variety of experiences that are within reach when the calling of the heart is followed. Myra is a trained classical pianist turned amateur auto mechanic; a corporate accountant who can dissect a cadaver. An organic farmer, an alchemist and a yogini. But her highest calling is her work as a healer and as a teacher. In Myra’s words, “teaching was in me from the beginning of my life.” As a teenager she taught swimming to children with special needs, an experience that stirred within her a calling to support the growth of others. But sometimes the mind goes in a different direction from the heart. Myra lay her love for teaching to the side and pursued a career as a corporate executive. She found success in the world of business but to the detriment of her well-being. Myra was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age 30, a debilitating condition deemed “incurable” by doctors.Rather than accepting the diagnosis as fate, Myra resolved to reclaim her health. She found Yoga, which unveiled the root cause of her dis-ease: anger, over-exertion and a lack of connection to her spirit. By getting in touch with her breath, tapping into the magic of mantra and opening up to the flow of asana, Myra saw the symptoms of arthritis gradually dissipate, and eventually disappear.Inspired by the revolution in her own well-being, Myra began to teach Yoga full-time in 1994. A good teacher never ceases to be a student, and Myra continued to learn and expand with advanced practitioners like Betty Eiler, Richard Freeman, and Sandra Kozak. One day she showed up on the porch of Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India seeking to learn about Patanjali’s Sutras. Jois accepted her as his student, and from this experience she came to appreciate the classical student-teacher relationship, one which requires sustained commitment over time. She also learned to breathe, and to let the breath tell her when and how to move through fear of the unknown. Then the door to Ayurveda opened: Myra found ghee. During her studentship with Jois, Myra complained of stiffness in her joints. Fellow students suggested that she integrate ghee into her diet, and this simple action had an immediate and profound effect. With the internal lubrication and digestive support that ghee offered, Myra finally felt her body come into its natural state of flexibility and balance. In Ayurveda Myra found a delightful simplicity: this elegant and ancient science asked her to look to the subtleties of nature to understand her own true nature. It put the responsibility for healing firmly into her own hands. She came to fully appreciate the complementary nature of Ayurveda and Yoga, sciences that are designed to work in tandem to heal the mind, body and spirit.Myra went on to study with some of the Western world’s most prominent practitioners of Ayurveda, including David Frawley, Robert Svoboda, Maya Tiwari, Sarasvati Buhrman and Vasant Lad. She also completed advanced clinical studies in Ayurveda with Sunil Joshi at Vinayak Panchakarma Chikitsalaya in Nagpur, India.Together, Ayurveda and Yoga became the foundation for Myra’s life. In 1999 Myra founded Hale Pule Ayurveda & Yoga - a home-based holistic educational and healing centre where people gather to connect to their true selves and to the power of nature. Over 20 years, Myra and the Hale Pule team have guided thousands of people to live a more balanced and bountiful life through the practices of Ayurveda and Yoga.In order to expand the centre’s offerings, Myra moved Hale Pule Ayurveda and Yoga from Hawaii to the enchanting North Island of New Zealand in 2019. Hale Pule is currently offering a variety of online healing and learning opportunities with Myra. Distance training is also available in Ayurveda and Yoga including Ayurveda health counselor certification, and clinical mentoring for practitioners.
