Author Name
Karen Donley-Hayes (Author)
A main focus in Karen’s writing has always been animals, particularly horses, with forays into the medical field. She saw her first article published when she was in high school. That first official success led to a steady stream of submissions, a steady stream of rejections, but enough acceptances and publications to establish and build upon a foundation, and nurture her creativity and love of narrating. Karen has been writing in one capacity or another most of her life. Her work has appeared in the "Journal of the American Medical Association"; "Stethos - the biomedical humanities journal of the Cleveland Clinic Learner College of Medicine"; "Creative Nonfiction"; "Saturday Evening Post online"; "Blue Lyra Review"; "The Healing Muse"; "The Quotable"; "Pulse – Voices from the Heart of Medicine"; "Dressage Today"; "Equus"; "Modern Horse Breeding"; "The Horse"; "Hunter & Sport Horse"; "The Chronicle of the Horse"; and "Horse Illustrated", among others. Her work has been anthologized in "Chicken Soup for the Soul-My Cat's Life"; "The Heart of All That Is: Reflections on Home"; and "The Blue Lyra Review," and appears in the text, "How to Read Like a Writer: 10 Lessons to Elevate Your Reading and Writing." She was a Pushcart Prize nominee for Hens on a Porch from ”Blue Lyra Review," as well as for Under Cover from "The Quotable." Her first book, "Falling Off Horses," was released in print and ePub in March, 2023. A memoir, "Falling Off Horses" is a story about how the life and death of her best friend transformed the author; it's told with candor, but also with humor. And horses. And lovers. And friends. "Falling Off Horses" received a starred review from KIRKUS REVIEWS, a Recommended review from US Review of Books, and a 5-star review from Reader Views. And that's just the beginning of bizarre. "Shoalie's Crow" is scheduled for publication Spring, 2024.
