Dr. Hite completed his Educational Administration and Leadership Doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi.I have been teaching for 20 years and have taught in Tennessee, California, and Mississippi. I currently teach seventh-grade Cyber Foundations 1 at McLaurin High School in Rankin County, MS. McLaurin High School is a small “B” Rated Title 1 school in Southwest Rural Rankin County in unincorporated Florence, MS. McLaurin High School is named after its founder, T.C. McLaurin who started the school in 1950 as a school for the education of black children during segregation. I piloted a program for the Department of Education called Cyber Fusion. We implemented a new method for the delivery of computer education that integrates the technology course into the core content classes. The teachers and I collaborate and co-teach throughout the year. Technology content and objectives are taught and infused throughout the year within the core content area classes. This delivery method allows the students to be double blocked in English while still meeting the credit requirement for Cyber Foundations 1. I work directly with all 7th-grade teachers, to create collaborative, co-teaching experience for the students. My Philosophy of EducationEducation must be engaging, applicable, challenging, and fun in a safe, organized environment that allows students to express themselves, make mistakes, bask in the glow of their accomplishments, and agree to disagree with me or other students.Lessons should incorporate as much hands-on learning as possible. Students working with their hands to create something based on the principles they have learned have a much better chance of remembering the concepts presented during lectures or class discussions. By applying the concepts to actual world activities, the student understands the "why" of the class and the covered lesson. Additionally, hands-on activities encourage student collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity, creating an exciting classroom environment and sparking an even greater quest for student-driven learning instead of teacher-driven.Teaching is an instructional superhighway, where learning is a two-way street. The teacher serves as moderator or facilitator, the starter or spark that begins the education process. Still, by the end of the day, the students are taking ownership of their learning and sharing with the class the discoveries they have made.Hands-on activities also open the door for collaborative and correlative education between their other classes. While building cardboard chairs, students are applying math skills of angles, height, and weight calculations. They can use English by writing an instructional manual. They can apply art by drawing schematics in various views. They can study the history of chairs. They can explore the science of structures and materials. Students should use math, science, English, and art theories in a real-world, hands-on assignment with a cardboard chair they have worked to create at its conclusion (in this instance). This has the added benefit of instilling pride and excitement in the students as well. I want students to enjoy school and the challenges of the education process as much as teachers enjoy teaching their subject area.I also believe in parental contact and keeping parents in the loop of what is happening in the classroom, school, and with their students. It still takes a village, and I believe in contacting parents weekly and having parents as partners in the school. I want parents to be invested in the intellectual growth of their children. Parents can be contacted through the class newsletter, Class website, phone conversations, and conferences.I love P-12 education; these 12 years are so crucial to the development of young people. Not just intellectually but socially, emotionally, and physically. This period will shape their view of the world of education and people. I want their experience to be as positive as possible and I know it takes teachers who are embracing their “why” to accomplish that.
