José Luis Nieto Mingo was born in the Madrid neighborhood of Chamberí in 1964, to a Spanish mother and a Puerto Rican father. At the age of five, he went to live with his parents and sister in Puerto Rico, where he attended school for the first time. During the summers of his childhood, he would travel from Puerto Rico to Madrid to visit his large maternal family. He studied history and law at universities in the United States and Puerto Rico. Since 1994, he has been living in Puerto Rico with his wife Glorín, with whom he has three daughters. Currently, he is a lawyer, law professor, columnist, and a doctoral student in the history of Puerto Rico.
