Author, Editor, Consultant, Mission Developer: Hello. I retired from the pastorate in 2016 to pursue my prodding and calling to engage in a new level of ministry, mentoring, and consulting with ministers and leaders. My ministry title is “Mission Developer/Consultant.” I served five years as Professor of Urban Theology at Charlotte Christian College and Theological Seminary. I also operated a very small business providing content/developmental editing for writers and self-publishing and released about 30 client books. Teaching is my primary gift and calling, and evangelism is my secondary gift. However, my approach to teaching is not academic per se, and I don’t use business models to develop ministry, or concepts from secular society. I extract Kingdom Concepts from Scripture. These are principles for the functioning of the Church within society.I am a seventy-three-year-old, physically fit, mentally sharp, six-foot-five inch, 220-pound former high school and college basketball player. I was “called” to ministry while in college. Later I became ordained through three denominational churches and two local churches. My credentials qualify me for consulting, life coaching, counseling, and performing all sacerdotal duties of an ordained minister recognized by the IRS. My preaching and teaching cover a broad range of subjects. My title for service today is Mission Developer and Developmental Editor. I have been married to Doris W. Ross for 46 years, and she is a retired Clinical Nurse from the Mecklenburg County Health Department. We have three adult children, Jeremy Ross (44) Loomis Security, Kassia Ross (40), Utility Administrator, Danielle Ross (38), and Nurse Practitioner. My highest degree in education is a Master's of Divinity in Theological Education, Bachelor's studies in Sociology and Psychology, and an Associate in Applied Science in Human Services.I’ve served as a pastor to three churches, one urban church plant, and two multiethnic church plants. My duties covered a broad range from shepherding the flock with a vision mandate, outreach to at-risk communities, community development/civil service boards, developing nonprofits, and leadership development, just to name a few. My forte is cross-cultural development (building bridges of reconciliation between different ethnic groups) and writing. I served as a seminary professor for four and a half years at a local Christian College in Charlotte North Carolina. During that time I was struck by the illiteracy of many of the students. From that moment on, I put together the framework for a writing service and developed my “Writing with Flair” Guide—a writing industry/grammatical guide and organized my small sole proprietorship service, JJ Planter Books in 2014 and assisted clients with editing and self-publishing. Today my business is known as “JJ Planter Writing & Ministry Consulting.”My cultural experience encompasses living in the north, and south, and interacting and communicating cross-culturally with different ethnicities. My expertise is in Urban Theology, Urban Ministry, Urban Demography, Cross-Cultural Outreach, Urban Community Development, Urban Evangelism, Urban/Cross-Cultural Church Planting, Contemporary Urban Issues, Black Church History, Planting & Growing Urban Churches, and Nonprofit Vision & Development. My expertise is in formal/informal writing, public/motivational speaking, research, and nonprofit development.
