Hans L. G. Aili (Author)
Theodore W. Pietsch is Professor Emeritus in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, and Curator Emeritus of Fishes at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is author of more than 200 scientific and popular articles, including more than a dozen books, that focus primarily on marine ichthyology, especially the biosystematics, distribution, reproductive biology, and behavior of teleost fishes. Prominent among these are "Oceanic Anglerfishes: Extraordinary Diversity in the Deep Sea," published by the University of California Press in 2009; "Fishes of the Salish Sea: Puget Sound and the Straits of Georgia and Juan de Fuca," with co-author James Wilder Orr, published by the University of Washington Press in June 2019; and "Frogfishes: Biodiversity, Zoogeography, and Behavorial Ecology," published by Johns Hopkins University Press in March 2020.Pietsch has also published extensively on the history of science. Among the latter are works on the French comparative anatomist Georges Cuvier and his 22-volume "Histoire Naturelle des Poissons" (1828−1849); bookdealer, publisher, and secret agent Louis Renard and his "Fishes, Crayfishes, and Crabs"; the unpublished manuscripts of the French explorer-naturalist Charles Plumier; and the unpublished paintings of Indo-west Pacific marine fishes and crustaceans of Isaac Johannes Lamotius. His first novel, "The Curious Death of Peter Artedi: A Mystery in the History of Science," was published by Scott & Nix, New York, in spring 2010. Volume one of Cuvier's "History of the Natural Sciences: Twenty-four Lessons from Antiquity to the Renaissance," and "Trees of Life: A Visual History of Evolution" were published in spring 2012. Volume two of Cuvier's "History of the Natural Sciences: Nineteen Lessons from the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries" was published in June 2015; and volume three, "Twenty Lessons from the First Half of the Eighteenth Century," appeared in July 2018. The remaining two volumes of the latter series are currently in preparation.Read more about this authorRead less about this author

In this attempt to bring together in a single volume all that is known about the Swedish naturalist Peter Artedi, a chronicle of his life is provided, beginning with his early upbringing in the Parish of Anundsjö, Ångermanland, his school days at Härnösand, his ten years at Uppsala University, his time in England, his life and work in Holland, and ending with his untimely death by drowning in an Amsterdam canal at age 30. Benefiting enormously from an early friendship with the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus, famous for establishing binomial nomenclature, the modern system of naming organisms, the two early on made elaborate plans to classify plants and animals in ways that would later be described as revolutionary.

Artedi, being more interested in zoology, took on the fishes, amphibians, and reptiles-as well as the plant family Umbelliferae (Apiaceae), while Linnaeus, who was already by this time working on his sexual system for plants, took all the remaining vegetable kingdom, the insects and birds. Both agreed to work independently on minerals and mammals.

Although passing before he had a chance to publish on his part of the plan, Artedi left behind a wealth of material in manuscript, mainly on the biology of fishes but also on quadrupeds, that is here translated into English from the original Latin and analyzed in light of present-day knowledge. In addition to adding details to what is already known, thanks to a number of eminent scholars, about the life of Peter Artedi, an important secondary goal of this work is to formulate a new perspective on the usefulness in practice of Artedi's zoological methods, which no naturalist had heretofore put to paper.

Readers will be surprised at the depth and breadth of his contributions, especially his work on fishes, which has earned him the well-deserved title of "Father of Ichthyology. ".
