Author Name
Gene Thomas Colwell (Author)
Gene Thomas Colwell, PhD, is Professor Emeritus at The Georgia Institute of Technology and earlier was at The Oak Ridge National Laboratory and The University of Tennessee. His non-fiction book "Beyond The Veil" describes his fifty year long search to find meaning and perspective in an ever evolving personal universe. The work makes use of his scientific experience but is primarily based on his long term interest in other fields that are not easily treated by the scientific method. He has come to believe, as reported in his book, that philosophy, science and theology are each important and need not be at odds with one another to those seeking truth and peace as they approach death. His Novel "Clarence" is about an old man with dementia who lives mostly in an isolated mental space separated from those around him but surprisingly has powerful mental abilities in a new-found almost infinite and eternal space-time.His non-fiction book "Expanding Inward" describes how his understanding of the Flow of Life has changed over time from childhood days to late life. He has learned to view natural and spiritual phenomena with many more dimensions (perspectives) than those few he had as a child. genecolwell@earthlink.netRead more about this authorRead less about this author

This book is about how people view their last times on earth. It is mostly about old people but young people also die and in many cases their death is tragic.

Some people seem to thrive in their last times being adjusted and somewhat happy and even some of these are productive in one way or another. On the other extreme there are people that have trouble dealing the circumstances of last times.

Of these some even contemplate or actually commit suicide. Every person has a unique set of circumstances at any time in their life and these circumstances vary with age.

Some people seem to be born into the best of circumstances and continue to thrive throughout their life. And some of these very fortunate ones have a set of beliefs that allow them to not fear death and look forward to the immortality of their souls in an afterlife.

On the other extreme we have those unfortunate people that are born into poverty perhaps with mental and physical ailments and have little or no family life in countries that are poor and unstable and maybe, at times, involved in wars. They seem to struggle every day and may die young with no hope of a better life here or hereafter.

For people that do reach old age it seems that the hardest thing for them to somehow achieve is a peace of mind. There are many obstacles to hinder or prevent the elderly from attainment of a peaceful mindset.

The old will have diminished mobility and associated pains, organs that are failing perhaps most troubling is the increasing loss of memory and other types of mental decay. And then, in many cases, older people have financial and family problems.

Some people hate old age because they simply don't have the mental and physical strengths they once had. But even for the wealthy and well-connected and relatively healthful just letting go of wealth and social standing can be untenable.

I have studied over many years the different feelings that people have about their last days on earth. It is clear that those who believe in immortality of the soul and the possibility of a good afterlife are more likely to adjust well to their last earthly days.

Old age can bring happiness and peace in an evolved space-time with new mental and spiritual powers and little or no fear of impending death even though a veil has developed with time that separates us from those around us. It can be a time when we slow down and spend much of our remaining time in contemplation of the meaning of life and the hereafter.
