He retired in 2000 as the English Chairman of Middletown High School and offers sessions in Salve Regina University's Circle of Scholars Program. He is a member of the RI Watercolor Society and the state Ambassador to the Portrait Society of America. He received an Education for Service Award from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, in 2018. After receiving an MA in history at Boston College, he attended Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, and is a veteran.He exercises daily swimming, cycling, and walking.
