Author Name
David J Schryver (Author)
David J. Schryver was born and raised in Watertown, New York. After high school, he received an AAS Degree in Math/Science from Jefferson Community College in Watertown and a BS in Secondary Education with New York State Certification to teach mathematics, 7-12, from SUNY Oswego. He taught high school mathematics for 33 years. Early in his career, he earned an MEd and CAS in Educational Administration from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. He spent six years in an administrative capacity, including a stint as Superintendent of Schools at the former Edwards Central School, in Edwards, New York, before returning to the classroom in the fall of 1985.He and his wife, Marcia, a school reading specialist, were married in 1978. Now both retired, they split their time between their home on Lake Ontario in northern New York and their winter home in Zephyrhills, Florida. They also spend as much time as they can with their children and grandchildren.A sideline in web development led to the creation of a website which has become a comprehensive guide to waterfalls in the upper portion of New York State. Since Author Central does not allow links to websites, that address can not be listed here. Please do a web search for “Northern New York Waterfalls”. As a result of this website, he had the opportunity to co-author the book _Waterfalls of New York State_ in 2012. Following this came five more books about waterfalls in the northern portion of New York State. These were self-published between 2017 and 2021.He and his wife have been “chasing” lighthouses longer than they have been interested in waterfalls. Their current home is a short distance from several beacons on Lake Ontario and along the St. Lawrence River. They have viewed and climbed towers in many US states, mostly on the east coast and Great Lakes, but also in Alaska and Hawaii. He has now written six books in his "Our Little Lighthouse Book" series. _Our Little Florida Lighthouse Book_ was the first in this series and was released in late 2021. A few weeks later, _Our Little Lower Atlantic Lighthouse Book_ was published. This covered beacons in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. _Our Little Mid Atlantic Lighthouse Book_ (New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Eastern Pennsylvania), _Our Little New York State Lighthouse Book_ and _Our Little Maine Lighthouse Book_ all came out in 2022. _Our Little Western New England Lighthouse Book_ which covers towers in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont and New Hampshire, went to print in 2024. Future releases include the lights of New York City and Long Island, the towers in Massachusetts and stations in the western Great Lakes states.Autographed copies of all of David Schryver’s books are available on-line at his bookstore. Please do a search for “David Schryver Bookstore” to access this.Read more about this authorRead less about this author

Lighthouses were originally built to guide mariners on their journeys and to help them avoid hazards of the seas. This book focuses on the lights in the western portion of New England, the states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont.

We start in Connecticut, just east of the border with New York State. After seeing twenty (20) towers in that state, we continue east, visiting twenty-one (21) more in Rhode Island.

Some of these beacons are on the shore and some are out in the Long Island Sound and Atlantic Ocean, requiring a boat cruise to view them. We then jump across Massachusetts to Portsmouth, New Hampshire before heading inland.

Our trip is rounded out with a boat tour of three lights on Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire and six more along the Vermont/New York border. Since we are visiting these last six from land, a fairly unique situation is presented, one of these six is in New York but must be viewed from Vermont and another is in Vermont but must be seen from New York! Each entry will give directions on finding that structure, pertinent information on it and other interesting facts about it as well as a full-page color photograph of the tower.

There is no need for a tour guide with this book in your possession. Whether you are a lighthouse aficionado who loves chasing these classic structures and or a young family on a budget who is looking for a low-cost tourist option, everyone should find something of interest in these pages.

Above all, enjoy the lighthouses. .
