Em plena pandemia de Covid-19, o coronel Assimi Goïta assumiu o controlo do Mali e pôs fim às práticas da França a partir de maio de 2021. Os vizinhos do Burkina Faso seguiram o exemplo em janeiro de 2022.

O primeiro golpe militar de 2022 foi interrompido pelo do capitão Ibrahim Traoré em setembro do mesmo ano. Nos meses que se seguiram, o Burkina Faso e o Mali mantiveram uma cooperação frutuosa e sem precedentes.

No entanto, durante o fórum internacional Exército 2023, em Moscovo, o general Tchiani Abdourahamane tomou o poder no Níger. De regresso de Moscovo, os dois oficiais superiores deram o seu apoio ao seu antecessor do Níger e aproveitaram a oportunidade para formar a Aliança dos Estados da ESA em 16 de setembro de 2023.

Desde essa data, a segurança da zona tem sido assegurada, com resultados prometedores, apesar dos ataques simultâneos gerados pela ideia de cunhar dinheiro e da sua saída conjunta da CEDEAO. Esta reação dos Estados da ESA parece ter afetado profundamente o sistema económico e orçamental da França.
