Sam Long, divorced schoolteacher and retired Army officer, visits and falls in love with Whetstone, a revitalized former West Virginia logging town, and decides to retire there, start a fly shop business, and enjoy a quiet and peaceful mountain lifestyle. Whetstone is also his father’s hometown and a place where Sam has fond memories of holiday and summer visits with his grandparents.

He learns that Whetstone is not the place he expected. The town folk are friendly but suspicious of his return, the fly shop business is not well received, and then he learns from an old family acquaintance that his father believed the automobile crash that killed his grandparents may not have been an accident.

Sam soon finds himself balancing his time between establishing his fly shop business and chasing the truth behind his father’s reluctance to return. He soon uncovers a long history of corruption, infidelity, and murder of which his grandfather – a respected sawmill superintendent – may have known too much.

Sam intends to find out the truth, even as it puts him and others in personal peril. His future in Whetstone depends upon it.

Old Secrets and Long Memories captivates readers with a diverse cast of characters, including a shy teenage boy whom Sam befriends and hires, a local bar owner with an intriguing past, an elderly aunt with family secrets and warnings, and others who find themselves entangled in Sam’s story.
