He said he used a mysterious means linked to the coin of a wizard to recover assets lost by humans to disasters (recovering them in form of their cash worth) and putting these assets back into human society - in form of their cash worth….

He was thus making money through a mysterious retrieval of worldwide lost money and assets for himself. He was not literally stealing from anyone.
