EVENT NEWS! Come to the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum in Fremont, CA on October 5th for a Laura La Plante book signing and film viewing of The Cat and the Canary (1927)! Laura Jerrolds is a silent film historian with a special interest in 1920s actresses. Her love for the era came to be while writing her first book, a middle-grade tale of time travel, Help...! It's 1928!. In 2022, she graduated from the Florida Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in marketing and currently works in Human Resources Management at Florida State University, residing in Tallahassee. Jerrolds' first biography and non-fiction book, Laura La Plante: Silent Cinderella, is her proudest accomplishment, as researching the actresses helped her to connect further with the period she admires so greatly. Other works under her name include Wait...! It's 1884!, Look...! It's 1955!, and The Riverton Mystery, the once-unreleased 1944 manuscript from renowned children's author Lilian Garis, where Jerrolds wrote an introduction, compiled and edited the project that is currently housed at The New York Public Library. Laura La Plante (1904-1996) was one of the most beloved stars of the silent era, known for her classic blonde bob haircut and dazzling screen presence. Although comedies were her specialty, she is best remembered for her role as Annabelle West in the thrilling mystery story The Cat and the Canary (1927), which inspired countless haunted house films in the following decades.

In La Plante’s first-ever full-length biography, her entire life story is recounted, from her poverty-stricken upbringing to her retirement in the California desert with her movie-producing husband, Irving Asher. The book features 101 photographs of the actress, personal letters and interviews from Laura La Plante, her filmography, and an introduction by film historian Kevin Brownlow.
