In 1891 the city of Calico was a bustling mining town in the middle of the Mojave Desert, drawing in immigrants from every corner of the world. Anyone running from something, could find a haven here.

The hardworking town was dealt a heavy hand when east met west, and the boss of a Yakuza family from Japan reluctantly took up business in the desert. Halfbreed Hassie Bera wanted no more trouble in her young life, but it always seemed to find her, and there was no way she was going to let her girls in the saloon get caught up in this personal feud.

More often than not though, it was the girls who paid the price when men got angry or sloppy like they were now. This fight wouldn’t be like any other she’d seen before.

She didn’t know the Yakuza culture, and they didn’t know her, but people aren’t always what they seem at first glance and a woman has a really good way of getting to the truth of the matter sooner rather than later. When Hassie uncovers some startling facts, she has to come to terms with how to protect the ones she loves, but will she be able to do that when her hands are covered in blood too?.
