Ne La struttura del comportamento e ne La fenomenologia della percezione, Merleau-Ponty denuncia i fraintendimenti del problema del gesto corporeo veicolati dalle classiche interpretazioni fisico-meccaniche e psicologiche.
Egli critica anche l'analisi filosofica moderna, che si basa su una tradizione cartesiana fondata sulla certezza del cogito. Merleau-Ponty propone un punto di vista alternativo alle proposte della tradizione cartesiana e della psicologia, e ci invita a riflettere sul fatto che il gesto può essere legato almeno a tre dimensioni: il corpo, il linguaggio e anche, al di là di questo, il silenzio all'interno del quale nasce per costituire una nuova espressione.
