From that moment, a passion for literature took root at the age of 14 when a novel gifted by an ELA teacher opened a new realm of possibilities. The desire to evoke emotions through the written word became an unwavering aspiration for Smith.But Smith’s path was far from linear. Serving in the United States Air Force, traversing the globe solo, and immersing themselves in roles as diverse as teaching kindergarten and 6th grade and working as a social worker, each experience added layers to her storytelling.Writing and publishing over five books became her greatest challenge yet, but also her most exhilarating pursuit. As a Black lesbian, Ro Smith envisions a literary landscape where Black lesbian protagonists thrive across all genres, a vision seldom realized.
