Venkit S. Iyer MBBS, MS Surgery, FACS, FRCS-C, FICS Dr. Venkit S. Iyer is a highly respected physician born in Palakkad District, Kerala State, in India. His parents emphasized the value of education. This enabled him to achieve a higher education and subsequent admission to medical college. After completing his medical degree in 1967, he went on to complete post-graduation (master’s degree) in surgery. Immediately afterward, he migrated to the United States for higher education and training in surgery. He completed an internship and residency in New York. Subsequently he started working at the same hospital as a full time teaching faculty member in the department of surgery. After a year of work and teaching at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York, he relocated to Florida, starting a consulting private practice in general and vascular surgery. For thirty years, he practiced surgery in Palm Harbor, Florida, retiring in 2014. Since then, he has participated in various medical missions and other charitable work. His publications include the following: Decision Making in Clinical Surgery, a guidebook for practical use of medical students, interns, and residents in surgery as well as junior surgeons. It is a symptom-based approach on common surgical problems they encounter during rounds or in the office. Simple language with straightforward information on diagnosis and treatment makes it an easy reference book. Second edition of this book was published four years later, updating current information and adding ten new chapters. Aging Well and Reaching Beyond, an easy-to-read book on healthcare matters for the general public. It addresses wellness measures, preventive health, elder care, and end-of-life issues. How to live well, how to age well, how to increase longevity, and how to prepare for one’s end peacefully are some of the items discussed. The Clinic, a fact-based fiction based on genetic therapy, genetic modifications, assisted reproductive technology, and changing societal standards. Complex issues in the field are addressed as a conversational story. First edition of “Geriatrics Handbook” was co-authored with Dr David Bernstein. The last book is “Iyer’s storybook for children” written in easy language for children to read with many illustrations and health care messages. Dr. Venkit S. Iyer is a board-certified surgeon, Fellow of American College of Surgeons (FACS), Fellow of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCS-C), and Fellow of International College of Surgeons (FICS) and he holds a master’s degree (MS) in surgery. He has held many leadership positions, teaching positions, and given many talks and lectures in various forums. Dr. Iyer has written numerous articles in various journals and magazines.
