Like negotiation, mediation is a method of conflict management which is essentially based on the development of communication between the parties. However, we must not fall into "the naivety of considering communication as a universal solvent for conflict, the simple application of which would be a guarantee of improvement of things".

On the contrary, communication can serve both to reduce and intensify conflict and can be used to transmit messages of both hatred and threat as well as reconciliation. To summarize, communication is a useful and necessary tool in mediation, but, again, "good communication cannot guarantee that the conflict will be resolved or even improved, but poor communication greatly increases the likelihood that the conflict will escalate ".
