How did voluntary death come to be known as suicide? That's the question the book seeks to answer, by delving into the depths of the tradition that transformed a manner of dying into a manner of killing. The idea of suicide, whether we realize it or not, conjures the notion of murder, of homicide.

How did what the Stoics termed a rational exit become an morally unforgivable crime? In this first volume, an entire Greco-Roman and Christian tradition is put under scrutiny, not to answer historical questions, however, but to provide clues to our time in the challenge of questioning itself. The linguistic diversity of antiquity that expressed voluntary death has been replaced by the idea of suicide.

The comprehensive "History of Suicide" by Professor Alexandre H. Reis, Ph.

D. , of the Federal University of Pelotas, offers a profound understanding of this phenomenon, only termed suicide in modern times.

We proudly present the translated Volumes 1, 2, and 3, covering Ancient Variations and Christian Domination, originally published in Brazil in 2020. This trilogy is a cornerstone in comprehending the origins of moral biases surrounding voluntary death.

In Volume 1, the author explores how voluntary death became synonymous with suicide, analyzing historical shifts that transformed it from a chosen departure to a criminal act. .
