Paul Hudson came to Christ while studying at Johns Hopkins Medical School and was called to a career in medical missions through a short-term experience in Kenya. During those years of preparation, he trained in internal medicine and public health and served as an epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Before returning to Africa, he and his wife, Clare, studied the Bible and missions at Columbia International University. They served together for thirty years with SIM (a church-planting mission agency) in Ethiopia, Nepal, and Thailand in clinical care, prevention, discipleship, and leadership training. He has been involved in assessment, coaching, and strengthening healthcare ministries around the world with SIM International for 14 of those years. Paul’s call to mission work occurred during the heyday of WHO's primary healthcare initiative. While at Johns Hopkins, he studied under Dr. Carl Taylor, founding chair of the Department of International Health, the best international community health preparation of the day. But putting theory into practice was a challenge! Healthcare and the Mission of God explores some of the challenges (and joys) of mixing faith and medicine in cross-cultural mission work. Serving the whole person among the world's poorest communities exposes not only their vulnerability but our own. Our own worldviews and assumptions are like hidden reefs that can shipwreck us if we don’t recognize them.Paul has served in leadership at SIM’s headquarters, including SIM International’s Board of Governors. Western and non-Western leaders have mentored him in missions, helping him gain a global perspective. Paul is currently involved in training and coaching doctors and nurses in cross-cultural work. He feels called to help develop the upcoming generation of global doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers in the mission of Jesus.
