Lizabel Mónica (Author)
Lizabel Mónica is a transdisciplinary writer and educator who divides her time between Cuba and the United States. She recently obtained her Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese and Latin American Studies at Princeton University and now works as a teacher and mentor at The Lawrenceville School. Mónica has been invited to speak about her creative and academic work at several universities in the US, including Princeton, Brown, and Columbia University. She is the author of fiction and poetry translated and collected in numerous anthologies. Since 2001, Lizabel Monica's literary practice has combined literature and visual arts to form transdisciplinary pieces. During the first decade of the 21st century, Monica was an editor of several Cuban literary and interdisciplinary magazines. Today she works as co-director of the Fruta Bomba art project (Havana, 2018 to present). Monica has also collaborated with visual artists in collective works in different art spaces. She has translated several texts, the most recent being Parables, a collaborative art book between Cuban visual artist José Toirac and American writer Robert Glück. Monica has published numerous articles on Cuban literature and visual arts as an academic. Lizabel Monica is currently finishing her doctoral thesis, which studies the influence of digital technology on contemporary Cuban literature, music, and visual arts. Her historical fiction story "Exercising the Productive Einbildungskraf" was translated by Margaret Randall and included in the anthology The Oval Portrait: Contemporary Cuban Women Writers and Artists (Ed. Soleida Rios, United States: Wings Press, 2018). Among her recent publications are "Alamar's Last Poet," a testimonial article published in the dossier dedicated to Cuban poet Juan Carlos Flores (Ed. Kristin Dykstra, "Out of Alamar: The Poetry of Juan Carlos Flores," United States: Chicago Review 61.3/4, July 2018) and her research article "¡Conectados! Independent media and cultural field," was released and presented in Documenta 2022, as part of a joint work coordinated by visual artist Tania Bruguera. Monica has published the generational anthology Distintos modos de evitar a un poeta (Ecuador: El Quirófano Editions, 2012) and the collection of poetry Hay Palabras Vulva (United States: Casa Vacía, 2023).
