Mary, a character in the book, is a dedicated Christian on a train traveling with her two daughters. She put her briefcase on the floor beside her as she looked out the window.

The gang members think Randall is also looking for the money, but Mary's kind and gentle manner distracts Randall. Mary believes God has answered her prayers, so she thinks God has put the cash in her briefcase because she has asked Him to help her provide for homeless people and runaway teens.
