Playing (and watching) cricket, traveling the world, writing (serious and fun stuff), enjoying the company of friends, cooking up a storm, and reading a book (or watching a movie) with a glass of red wine or scotch. That pretty much defines me. I was born in Kolkata, India, in a family full of academics and writers. Little surprise then that I grew up to write (and generally mess with people's happiness) for a living, before ditching that role to preach what I had practiced for two decades. Along the way, I have been married for 22 years to a fellow journalist/editor, dealt/dealing with the joys of being dad to a strapping teen, travelled to 18, maybe 20 countries across three continents and now live and teach in a fourth - far from 'City of Joy' where I grew up - nestled among the Appalachian Mountains in small-town Pennsylvania. Here is a more sensible bio if you are still interested: I am a former journalist in search of academic nirvana who spent two decades working across four cities and a dozen newsrooms in India. As a reporter I have covered general elections and natural disasters, and reported from global business meets, and conflict zones. Along the way I have interviewed people from all walks of life - from business leaders and political figures to beauty pageant winners, movie stars, Nobel laureates, and convicted criminals! As an editor, I have led editorial operations at some of the best-known Indian news organizations such as the Times of India, India Today, Mid-Day, Asian Age, and 9.9 Media. Today, armed with a Ph.D. I work as an associate professor of communication, journalism, and media at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, where I also serve as the director of our Ethnic Studies program. When I am not engaged in discovering and discussing new things with my students, I write on pretty much anything. I have two published books as well as multiple book chapters and journal articles - all serious, academic stuff. My dream however, is to pen a work of fiction - a novel! My first academic book was published in 2022. The next one (an edited volume with contributions from 21 authors across 11 countries) was published in 2024. Two more books are in the pipeline - one academic, and another...ok I am not telling you that yet! Watch this space. Read more about this authorRead less about this author

This book explores how journalism is practiced around the world and how there are multiple factors at the structural and contextual level shaping journalism practice. Drawing on case studies of how conflicts, pandemics, political developments, or human rights violations are covered in an online-first era, the volume analyzes how journalism is conducted as a process in different parts of the world and how such knowledge can benefit today's globally connected journalist.

A global team of scholars and practicing journalists combine theoretical knowledge and empirically rich scholarship with real-life experiences and case studies to offer a storehouse of knowledge on key aspects of international journalism. Divided into four sections – journalistic autonomy, safety, and freedom; mis(information), crises, and trust; technology, news flow, and audiences; and diversity, marginalization, and journalism education – the volume examines both trends and patterns, as well as cultural and geographical uniqueness that distinguish journalism in different parts of the world.

This volume will be of interest to students and scholars of journalism, media studies, and mass communication, as well as practicing journalists who want to report globally and anyone interested in gaining a foundational understanding of or researching journalism practices around the world. .
