Author Name
Danny Burke (Author)
Danny Burke was born in 1958 in the small farming community of Clyde, Kansas. A fan of the Old West and its many colorful characters, he’s always been fascinated by tales of marauding Indians, cavalry charges, gunfights, mountain men, and the high country. After graduating from high school, he joined the Fort Worth Fire Department, rising to the rank of lieutenant before finishing his 32-year career and retiring in 2011. He’d always wondered what it would be like to write a book, and with plenty of time on his hands during retirement, he wrote his first book, Fire Station Memories, an autobiography about his career with the FWFD. Broadening his horizons, he decided to try a second book, a novel about the great American West and the rugged men who helped explore and tame that land. Ride The High Country became his first book in The Frontiersmen Series.Besides his firefighting career, he’s worked as a janitor, built custom picture frames, done concrete work, roofing, hauled hay, cut wood, and surveying. Along with spending time with his family, Danny enjoys camping, gold prospecting, backpacking, writing, and photography.Read more about this authorRead less about this author

In mid-January 1865, the Galvanized Yankees were escorted from Camp Douglas to Camp Fry for training. Buck is ordered to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where his troop receives further orders to escort a General's daughter to her husband's post at Fort Kirby along the Smoky Hill Trail.

What begins as a routine escort soon becomes a struggle for survival along the most dangerous route from Atchison, Kansas, to Denver, Colorado. Against The Leaden Sky takes you on a journey across the vast expanse of the western Kansas prairie.

Gallop into battle to the brassy sound of a bugle blowing the Charge or shudder to the roar of a volley fire of Spencer carbines while standing your ground beside Buck and his men, fighting for their lives against overwhelming odds and experiencing the terror of facing Cheyenne, Lakota, and Arapaho warriors hell-bent on driving the white man from their homeland. .
